Projects - Sculpted Earth

Here is one of Magnuz of Sweden's projects in Second Life.

Snapshot
More images below

Sculpted Earth by Magnuz of Sweden is a topographic 3D representation of the Earth, to scale 1:250,000 (1 m in the model corresponds to 250 km in reality), with the height scale attenuated to 1: 2,500 (1 m altitude difference ion the model corresponds to 2.5 km in reality. The model shows the topography both above and below sea level, where the mapping on the sea floor is bluish in different nuances. There are also some additional information exhibitions inside the model.

Location

The Sculpted Earth is located in the north-westerm corner of the sim Badger, a region of the old southern continent of Second Life. It is built on a sky plaza hovering some 300 meters above the slope below.

Background

Some 25 years ago I saw drawn images of the Earth, displaying it's entire topography in exaggerated scale, both above and below sea-level, and I was fascinated by the information those images offered, clarifying both the land topography and revealing the wild landscape below the sea. Now, when I have the tools and skills to reproduce that in Second Life, I wanted to share that fascination with others, adding another dimension by not just offering renderings, but a 3D model for the viewers to explore themselves.

Construction

I acquired the land for the sculpted Earth in the sim Badger 2008-07-10 and built a generator to create the 288 sculpted and textured model tiles automatically 2008-07-25, after spending quite some time and efforts to prepare map and topography data outside Second Life. I created the environment surrounding the globe the next day, made some additions the day after that, and finally corrected a few flaws in the exhibition 2008-07-28. The rotating starry sky interior of the sculpted Earth was color corrected 2008-11-02 and an exhibit with 26 paleographic spheres of the Earth from 600 million years ago until today was added to the interior 2008-11-29. After that, no major changes have been made to the display.

Future

A guided tour with a "creeper", sneaking close above the landscape of the sculpted Earth, with the camera even closer to it, is being prepared, with the creeper done but the tour needing to be touced up a bit. A layer with markers for volcanoes and earthquake areas should be added.
